Litron Laboratories Scientists Win Prestigious Tibbetts Award

The Small Business Technology Council (SBTC) has awarded its prestigious Tibbetts Award to Stephen D. Dertinger, Director of Research, and Dorothea K. Torous, Director of Testing.  Dertinger and Torous played key roles in the development of Litron’s innovative MicroFlow® kits that measure chromosome damage caused by radiation, drug or other environmental effects. Using these kits, Litron has achieved groundbreaking advances in the testing of new medications. The company supports many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies during clinical and pre-clinical testing.

Carol Tometsko, Litron CEO, said, “There is a strong opportunity to commercialize biotech products such as this. The Tibbetts Award confirms that the innovative research that goes on in Rochester and at Litron is recognized by our customers and the federal government. To receive a national award is pretty nice!”

Dertinger and Torous received their award at a ceremony in Washington D.C., on September 26, 2006. They were also hosted at a Capitol Hill reception in the Senate Hart Building.

Named for Roland Tibbetts, the person acknowledged as the father of the Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program, these national awards are made annually to those small firms, projects, organizations and individuals judged to exemplify the very best in SBIR achievement. The emphasis on recognizing those accomplishments where, in the judgment of those closely involved and often most immediately affected, the stimulus of SBIR funding has had an important and definable difference.

In the selection of the Tibbetts Awards, the focus is primarily on economic impact of technological innovation, business achievement and effective collaboration with demonstrated state and regional impact.

Tibbetts Awards are an initiative of the non-profit SBTC, and includes support from NASA, National Science Foundation, Departments of Defense and Navy, Boeing and The Association for Manufacturing Technology.
